Ice Safety

Regardless of how low the temperatures drop, you may encounter open water at any point in your ice fishing expeditions.  Be aware of your surroundings, and continually test the depth – what appears to be safe, solid ice at one spot may be extremely thin and dangerous to walk on a few feet further on.  (Beware in particular of dangerous currents and springs that can cause thin ice all winter long.)

In general, the following ice thicknesses are  necessary for safety:

Walking — 4″
Snowmobile — 5-7″
Car — 8-12″
Truck — 12-15″

Check with local residents and the DNR for seasonal updates on ice safety.

There are innumerable, quality bait and tackle stores in the Grand Rapids area. Each fisherman has his own secret jig or lure to pull in the Big One.

Here are some main essentials that you will have to take with you, if you intend to fish the lakes or rivers of the area:

MN Fishing License – obtainable at bait shops, gas stations, and on the DNR website.
A measuring tape & knowledge of Minnesota’s Fishing Regulations.
Ice auger
Rod & reel (or tip-ups)

Many additional items will be needed, such as warm clothing, food, flashlights, and transportation.
