Grand Rapids always has a full event calendar.  A wide variety of things to do in the winter include, live theatre, live music, art/culture events, snowboarding, cross country skiing, and  biathlon events, hockey tournaments, children’s programs, Into the Woods Forest History Center programs, sled dog races, ice fishing tournaments, concerts, and so much more.  You will want to check out the event calendar to plan your visit to Grand Rapids.

FHC Winter AdventureGrand Attractions

There are several area attractions that are open year round. There is the Forest History Center that is open weekends (Friday to Saturday 8am-4pm). They have year round educational and historical programs. Their winter “Into the Woods” programs consist of family friendly events where you can experience fun in the forest. You can explore the forest trails, ice skate under the covered pavilion, have snow ball sling shot fights, build snow forts, take a sleigh ride, slide down Logger’s Mountain, and tour the 1900’s logging camp under winter conditions. You can warm up inside the interpretive center with some hot chocolate or cider. Check out all of the interactive forestry industry equipment, products and watch the MN wild fire video.

The Mt. Itasca Winter Sports Center is a beautiful ski center located just minutes from Grand Rapids, Minnesota.  Mt Itasca offers downhill ski runs, designated snowboarding hills, cross country ski trails, and snow tubing.  They are open extended hours during the holiday season (between Christmas and New Years) and then weekends the rest of the winter.  They have many cross country skiing, ski jumping, biathlon and snowboarding tournaments throughout the winter.  They have on site rentals available for half day and full day rates.  

The Reif Center has a full event calendar with live entertainment. They bring world renowned entertainment to Grand Rapids year round.  Some of their winter entertainment includes: Collin Raye, April Verch, Beatles Tribute Band Yesterday, and Kathy Mattea.  They also have performances geared towards school aged children schedule for this winter: Michael Lauziere (comedian, acrobat and musician all rolled into one), Super Scientific Circus, Click Clack Moo (based on the book by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin).  

A great indoor attraction site is the Judy Garland Museum and Children’s Discovery Museum which share an attraction location.  Come indoors and warm up inside the spacious Children’s Discovery Museum where you can view and interact with permanent and traveling exhibits.  Then take a tour of the 3,000 piece Wizard of Oz exhibit new this year.  You can tour Judy Garland’s childhood home that has been restored back to the early 1900’s.

Another place to head indoors on a really cold winter day is the Itasca County Historical Society. They offer a free museum that has lots of fun history and exhibits that will take you back in time. Fun for the whole family.  

If you are looking for indoor activities check out the Thunder Alley XL that provides hours of fun for the whole family. They offer bowling, arcade games, onsite bar that offers food on site.  

If the big screen is your thing, then you will want to check out Mann’s Cinema 8 on the south side of Grand Rapids. Mann’s brings the latest big screen movies to Grand Rapids.  You will have your choice of 8 movies, full concession food and beverages.

Outdoor Winter Recreation

Grand Rapids offers a wide selection of winter outdoor recreation.  We have hundreds of miles of cross country skiing. Make sure you purchase the Minnesota Ski Pass so you can use the Itasca County area ski trails.  There are over 1,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails.  Make sure to check the Trail Conditions and download the Itasca County Snowmobile Map before you arrive.  Grand Rapids has over 1,000 area lakes that provide a wide variety of ice fishing opportunity. There is over 1 million acres of public accessible acres to snowshoe on throughout the winter months.  Sometimes the area lakes provide the best access and views for winter recreation.  Just make sure to check the ice before venturing out.  No ice is safe ice.
