6 Fall Family Activities To Do In Grand Rapids MN

Fall is a great time to get out and enjoy family friendly activities around Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Crisp air and sweater weather is perfect for family hikes, pumpkin patches, and fresh apples. Several special events and yearly traditions fill up this year’s calendar which will give you plenty of things to do in the fall with kids!

Crazy mazes and cuddly animals are just part of the fun at Cowhorn Crossing Farm. This working farm, located south of town, offers a ton of fall fun. The hay maze has bales piled high inside the barn, zigging and zagging around corners, all to the delight of fast kids on a mission. Let them burn off more energy outside as the whole family works its way through the 13 acre corn maze. Later, relax on a tractor-pulled hay ride to a pasture of gentle farm animals.

Fresh fall produce is a treat for kids and adults. Travel to Lavalier’s Berry Patch and Orchard, located 5 miles southeast of Grand Rapids, and pick up a bag of juicy Minnesota apples. Kids can view the orchard and gardens to learn how food is grown and see the difference between a fruit tree and a squash vine.

Food adventures continue at the Grand Rapids Farmer’s Market, open through October on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Everyone can pick out a new food (kohlrabi, anyone?) to bring home and eat.

Explore History and Culture in Minnesota’s nature at the Forest History Center

A warm fall afternoon begs everyone to come outside and enjoy a family hike through brightly colored woods. The Forest History Center, open on Fridays and Saturdays, has wide, easy trails that wind around the visitor center. Inside, special Saturday programs encourage participants to learn about critters and phenology (September 20 and 27, 2014). Explore nature together and the rewards will last a lifetime.

For a fun pumpkin themed event, head to the Children’s Discovery Museum on October 2nd where young jack-o’-lantern designers use natural materials to create silly pumpkin faces (think acorn eyes and leafy grins). Call ahead and register for this free event.

Downtown Grand Rapids is the place to be on October 3 from 4 to 8 pm for the First Friday Art Walk. This free event invites families to meet local artists as they share their music, sculptures, and writings. Artists display their work at local businesses and then encourage everyone who stops to embrace their inner artist.
