Northwoods Pond Hockey Championship Registration Open

Written by: John Scaly, Northwoods Pond Hockey Chair

The 3rd annual Northwoods Pond Hockey Championship.  It is a one-day pond hockey tournament on McKinney Lake in Grand Rapids.  This year the tournament is set to take place Saturday, February 10, 2017.  The vision is to have 8 rinks, 48 teams, three divisions (Gold, Silver, and newly added this year Last Pick).  Last Pick is a division for those that have dabbled in skating and hockey and are far from perfecting those skills. It is for people that are looking to have a lot of good laughs, mostly at your own expense.  The winning team of the Last Pick division get to choose where the proceeds from the Last Pick division go to from a predetermined list of local non-profit charities and organizations.

Watch this quick video that showcases the Northwoods Pond Hockey Championship and features highlights from the 2017 event.

The primary goal of the tournament is to create an enjoyable and memorable community event that encourages people to get connected and be active during our long, cold winters.  The theme of the event is “Turning Ice Into Water” captures our passion to play hockey so that people around this world can have clean drinking water.  1 in 5 kids will die from drinking unclean water in Ethiopia.  We can help be a solution to this problem.  Proceeds from the Gold and Silver divisions will go towards digging water wells in Ethiopia through an organization called World Serve.

EVERYONE is welcome to this community event. Come cheer on the teams enjoy the festivities and the variety of food trucks.  This tournament is a fun way to tap into people’s passion for a great game, while connecting people, meeting needs in this community and around the world, and bringing an annual tradition to this community with positive immeasurable effects.  This is a day you won’t want to miss.  Hope to see you on the pond come February.   For questions, please feel free to contact Jon Scally at (218) 398-0741.  For more information on the tournament, visit our website at pondhockey.graog.com.
