Summer starts with a grand, one-of-a-kind event on the first weekend of June: the Wizard of Oz Festival at the July Garland Museum. As birthplace to Judy Garland, Grand Rapids draws Oz fans from far and wide to celebrate the 1939 movie. Your family will have a ball at special events like a red sneaker walk, Toto too dog talent contest and free showing of the iconic film.

For the Automobile Enthusiasts…and Cowboys

WeekenFans of outdoor action find the fix they need in this northern Minnesota town. The Quadna Mud Nationals is an exciting competition for ATVs, featuring mud bogs and an obstacle course.

The last weekend of July features two great outdoor events. Spend a day in town at the Weekend of Wheels car show. It’s a true car lover’s show, featuring 24 car classes from antiques to mustangs.

And for a different kind of mustang, you have to get to the North Star Stampede rodeo. Take Scenic Highway 38 north to Effie and watch horse and rider become one as they race around barrels and capture the prize.

July features both the Downtown Art Fair and the Pierced Festival, which works to promote underground artists and music.

Music and theater lovers eagerly anticipate the Mississippi Melody Showboat performances. The shows are a mix of music and skits, complete with steamboat era costumes and a steamboat.
