Grand Rapids Ice Fishing Report 3-9-16

Tom Neustrom Winter PerchThis week’s Grand Rapids Ice Fishing Report brought to you by Tom Neustrom.  Tom Neustrom is a legendary professional fishing angler who has been inducted into the Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame and the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. He has a fishing guide service called Minnesota Fishing Connections.  If you do not have the equipment, don’t know where to go, but want to catch fish, give Tom a call.

Normally this time of year anglers are worrying about late ice out and when in late April will it leave the lakes. Not this year. For some the concern is if it will be out in late March. With unseasonable warm weather and occasional rain, it’s chewing up the ice in big chunks. Driving cars and trucks soon will not be an option and wheelers and snowmobiles will be best.

The ice becomes soft and if able to get out there can be some excellent angling for panfish. With melting water falling into the lakes little critters come of the bottom, and the crappies, bluegills, and perch are right there to dine. Small tungsten jigs with wax worms, euro larvae, #3 Jiggin Raps and other bite size baits will turn the trick. Keep moving until you find active fish.

MN DNR Ice SafetyBe very careful in these final weeks of ice fishing. Things are starting to change quickly.  Be sure to let someone know where you are going and when they can expect you back.  Use caution and make sure to check out the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Fishing Regulations and Ice Safety Guidelines before heading out.
