Grand Rapids Ice Fishing Report 3-22-17

Grand Rapids Late Season CrappieThis week’s Grand Rapids, MN area Ice Fishing Report brought to you by Andy Walls and Grant Prokop at Thousand Lakes Sporting Goods. Check them out for all of your sporting good needs.

Spring has crept upon us, but there is still plenty of ice to get on and chase panfish! The crappie and bluegill bite has been very steady on most all area lakes but Bowstring, Pokegama, and Winnie have been kicking out some great fish.

Bowstring has been hot for crappie and perch. Fishing the break lines from 18-24 feet of water has been the most consistent. These fish have been moving a lot, so setting up a house and waiting the fish out has been one of the best bets.

Pokegama has been a good bite in the morning and evenings. Low light conditions seem to be key in getting the best action. 8-16 feet of water with a jig and a wax worm has been great for both crappie and bluegills. Finding the remaining standing vegetation has been very productive lately.

Winnie continues to kick out some great perch action. Shallower sand flats on the main lake have been holding good number of jumbo perch. Fishing fast and covering water is the name of the game here until you find some fish. Using 1/8 ounce rattle spoons tipped with either a minnow head or wax worms has been a good option in tricking these fish into biting!

In the Grand Rapids, MN area you will find lots of lodging options from conveniently located Hotels/Motels, quaint B&B’s, and Minnesota Fishing Resorts. There is something for all budgets.
