This week’s ice fishing report brought to you by Tom Neustrom, MN Fishing Connections.
The colder weather has started to improve the ice conditions on our area lakes and the ice fishing participation has been torrid. Many of the smaller lakes in the Grand Rapids area are producing good catches of crappies and bluegills. Many anglers after checking ice conditions are finding anywhere from 6 to 11 inches of ice and taking ATV’s and snowmobiles to their hot spots. Depending on the lake, depths of 20-30 feet have been best for crappies and along the deep weed edges and shoreline drops for bluegills. The best bait has been the VMC Tungsten Tubby and 2-3 waxies for both species. Some of the bays on Pokegama Lake, Little Splithand, Bass Lake, and several others have been good choices. Walleye fishing has been decent now that ice conditions are improving and anglers can get to some of their favorite spots. Northern Pike spearing has been good and reports of several nice fish have been reported at area bait shops. Call ahead to Ben’s Bait, Thousand Lakes Sports, River Rat Bait, or Fred’s Bait for up to the minute ice fishing reports.
