Grand Rapids Ice Fishing Report 1/21/16

Winter PerchThis week’s Grand Rapids Ice Fishing Report by Tom Neustrom, MN Fishing Connections.

The recent cold weather has its positives and we have just what the ice fishing doctor ordered of late. We finally have good ice on most of our lakes and getting around has been good. With ice depths from 10-16 inches on area lakes most anglers are finding travel and fishing opportunities to their liking.

Panfish seem to be the top of everyone’s list, but walleye fishing has been good as well. Big Winnie has been the best choice especially the last 2-3 hours, of the day. Depths of 19-25 feet on the off shore humps have been best. A gold or glow spoon with a minnow head or a dead stick with a plain hook and shiner have been producing best. Drill several holes around the area you are fishing and start deeper and end up slightly shallower for the last hour.

Northern pike have been active and tip-ups with sucker minnows or golden shiners have been producing nice pike in 8-12 feet in and around weed beds all over the lake. Crappies and bluegills have been biting on small VMC tungsten jigs and waxies especially in Big and Little Cutfoot. Also Big and Little Splithand and smaller lakes north of Grand Rapids have been great choices. Perch fishing has been spotty of late, but expect that to pick up soon.

Next time you are looking for a place to fish, consider coming to Grand Rapids, Minnesota. A lot of people drive through our town onto other Minnesota lake towns, but stop, stay and fish. You will be pleasantly surprised!  There are over 1000 lakes in Itasca County and over 100 within minutes of downtown Grand Rapids!
