Grand Rapids Ice Fishing Report 1-9-15

Winter NorthernThe weather has been” up and down and all around”. Cooler temperatures and additional snow is starting give opportunities to multiple options for travelers coming to Grand Rapids. Trails are starting to form and with a little more snow we will enjoy all the events that winter brings us. The Ice fishing continues to be good on area lakes and northern pike and crappies have been especially active. There have been reports of nice pike coming from Spider and Pokegama Lakes. Big Winnibigoshish has also been good for pike and yellow perch as well. Crappie fishing has been good on Big Balsam, small lakes north of Grand Rapids, and Big and Little Cutfoot lakes. Be mobile when looking for active fish and drilling several holes is a good way to find and catch fish. Be careful when venturing out with wind chills that can be dangerous. Dress in layers and always wear thermal gloves when out enjoying winter activities.

Update: Grand Rapids received 2-4 inches of snow overnight. People are starting to be able to use snowmobiles on the lakes. Caution is still to be used on the ice because no ice is safe ice.  Make sure before heading out that you tell someone or multiple people the details of where you are going (when, the route you are planning to take, etc).  This is helpful if you do not arrive around the time you are expected and your mobile device is not available they can give this to the authorities in aid of a search.
