Grand Rapids Fishing Report by Tom Neustrom, MN Fishing Connections. Tom Neustrom is a Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame inductee who owns MN Fishing Connections, a Minnesota Fishing Guide Service.
Moving water is such a unique commodity and in Grand Rapids we are blessed with numerous lakes and the Mississippi River winding its way through the area like a wandering explorer that is filled with adventure. With the influx of kayaks into our society what a great adventure it would be to kayak down the Mississippi River for miles of unspoiled habitat and wildlife that rarely sees people down its shores. For the angler there countless turns and stretches that contain smallmouth bass, walleyes and northern pike for miles. Unspoiled by man’s sometime un-navigable waters, what a treat it would be. Paddle Hoppers, a Grand Rapids paddle sports store has sells, rents and services kayaks, canoes and SUP’s. If you rent from them they offer direct access to the Mississippi River from their store location on the west side of Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
The 2nd Annual GRAHA (Grand Rapids Amateur Hockey Association) Walleye Shootout is coming to Pokegama Lake this coming weekend with 100 teams vying for the championship trophy and $12,000 first place check. Of the 100 teams over 55 are from out of the area coming to stake their claim. Join the festivities this Saturday August 8th with the takeoff at Tioga Beach and the final announcement and awards at the IRA Civic Center starting at 4:00 pm also on Saturday. The format of CPR (catch, photo, and release) insures the release of all walleyes back into Pokegama Lake. It’s for a great cause and the fun for everyone.
