Grand Rapids Fishing Report 5-13-16

Tom Neustrom WalleyeThis week’s Grand Rapids Fishing Report is brought to you by Tom Neustrom, MN Fishing Connections.

We are on the doorstep of the 2016 Minnesota Fishing Opener. Anglers in Minnesota get so excited for this weekend. In Grand Rapids you will find the bait shops are bustling with all kinds of people seeking the right bait and tackle, and sales are brisk.

Make sure that you have appropriate clothing for this weekend. You should always have raingear available and it doesn’t hurt to pack a pair of gloves.

Some of the lakes you may want to consider are Winnibigoshish, Cut Foot Sioux, Bowstring, and Big and Little Splithand. Don’t overlook the Mississippi River either. When the current is moderate to slow as it is this year, the walleye fishing especially in the wholes and bends in the river can be excellent. People go to the river many times to get away from the crowds.

Northern Pike should be in the new emerging weed beds, and a lot of them will be in the same areas as walleyes also. Trolling spoons or rap husky jerks in 8-10 feet depths is a good method to find active Northerns. The above mentioned lakes will also be good for Northern Pike.

If you want to have some really good perch action, you want to fish small jigs and chubs in gravel and shallow rocks. If you find a lot of perch it can be fun with kids.

Don’t just drive through Grand Rapids, Minnesota.  There are over 1,000 area lakes for your to come fish and catch a wide variety of fish species. Check out the wide variety of Grand Rapids Lodging properties that are ready to serve your overnight lodging needs. You will find everything from Economical Motels, conveniently close Hotels, quaint Bed & Breakfasts, and open year round Minnesota Resorts.

Have a great opener!
