Ice Fishing is right around the corner. Grand Rapids has 1,000 lakes to ice fish.

This week’s Grand Rapids Fishing Report brought to you by Tom Neustrom, owner and professional fishing guide.

Watch out!!!!! The weather is changing and I hope you are ready. The angling world will also change from soft water to hard water before you know it. Is your boat put away yet? Make sure everything is buttoned up in the next week. After deer season a little care should be taken on your open water tackle before putting away.

Reels  are a prime reason more than any tackle to do a little extra care and be ready for next season. I strip all the line from my reels and wipe the reel clean. I then take a spray bottle of Reel Magic, take the spool off and spray the shaft and inside, then wipe the excess off.  Turn the reel and open and close the bail on spinning reels and repeat the process a couple times. Most reels have an internal oil system that lubricates the inside gears. I also will put a couple drops of gun oil on the bail connections and this too will insure proper care of your reels for next season. Make sure you put your reels in a dry place as not to attract moisture.

On the ice fishing side, make sure especially with power augers that everything is in good working order. Change blades if needed and if you have old gas from last season, drain and fill with new gas. Change the plug for a minimal cost the will allow your auger to fire smooth and efficiently. I can’t tell you how many times I have had to loan my auger to an angler that had one that wouldn’t start. With the weeks prior to the hard water season taking a little time to prepare your equipment can make being on the ice a great experience. There are several shows in the coming weeks so try to attend and check out some of the new equipment. Ice will be here before you know it, so be prepared and ready.

There are over 1,000 lakes in the Grand Rapids, MN area. You don’t have to head all the way up to Lake of the Woods to catch GREAT fish this winter! Stop and stay in Grand Rapids. Two area ice fishing guides can help you catch fish: Brian Brosdahl, brosguideservice.com, Phone: wingsandwalleyesguideservice.com218) 259-0354.
