Dining IMG_9532Grand Rapids has many family friendly dining options to choose from.  When you travel with children you want to make sure that there are family friendly options, especially when it comes to meal time.  A tip is to bring along your child’s favorite book, small toy or electronic device to ensure that whatever eating establishment you happen upon the kids will be entertained.

Traveling can be challenging with children.  Meals are a large part of the traveling experience.  We have created top family friendly places to dine in Grand Rapids to alleviate some of the drama.

A happening place with great coffee, gelato, vegetarian and Italian sodas. The pride themselves on being the community gathering place, “where you can eat every day and be healthy”. They showcase a new artist every month on their walls.  This restaurant is a vibrant and eclectic space that is inviting to both children and adults. They have wonderful made scratch baked goods, sandwiches and soups made with garden fresh vegetables. They utilize the local farmers market for fresh farm eggs and vegetables they cannot get out of their own garden. A fun place to stop for a sweet treat or a full meal. Their downtown location makes them convenient to the Mesabi Trail.

Bridgeman’s offers home-style meals made from scratch, ice cream treats, fresh made pies, and a clean and welcoming establishment. They are conveniently located one west of downtown Grand Rapids. This is a family friendly atmosphere where the wait staff goes out of their way to make the kids feel at home.  They have a special kids menu. Who doesn’t like Bridgeman’s ice cream? They have over 20 flavors at all times with additional seasonal options.

The fun bright atmosphere welcomes you from the moment you pull into the parking lot.  Every Thursday night in the summer is an old car cruise in the parking lot next door. The Forest Lake Restaurant offers three restaurants under one roof.  You will find family friendly dining. They offer a children’s menu that comes on a coloring placemat to keep the kids entertained. They offer welcoming northwoods charm to everyone who enters through their doors. They are known for their wild rice soup, ribs, and steaks in the downstairs steakhouse.  They have daily specials, and make wonderful cocktails. The wait staff is friendly, and their bathrooms are clean. Beautiful views of Forest Lake from their large windows. You can choose if you prefer family style dining, sports bar or downstairs white table cloth steakhouse.

Gosh Dam Place is located just west of Deer River, but well worth the drive.  They offer home-style food that is made from scratch. They are known for their walleye fingers and burger baskets. You can catch your limit of fish, bring them into the Gosh Dam staff; they will batter and fry them, and serve family style with salads and fries. Their staff is friendly and inviting. The have an up north décor that is family style seating. They offer a kids menu and fun atmosphere. A must stop while traveling in and around the Grand Rapids area.

Jimmy John’s is known for freaky fast service, and this is what you get. Your sandwich will be made to order and you can watch it be made through their open kitchen layout. The kids really get a kick out of this! No special kids menu, but one sub can be split between two children easily. The vibrant atmosphere will blow you away from the moment you walk in the door; kids love their loud music. There is dining inside and out. You can eat there or take to go. Nice option for a picnic lunch or dinner.

Toivo’s offers a fun sports bar atmosphere. The kids enjoy the tall bar stool chairs with sayings on the back. They offer American basket style meals, and a special kids menu. The owners are on site every day. They are very welcoming and inviting from the moment you walk through the door. They offer seating on the family dining side and sports bar side; both are very family friendly.  The kids tend to like the sports bar side with all of the TV’s. They added an outdoor patio with umbrella covered tables. They offer nightly specials and events like Burger basket night on Wednesdays for $5.

Zorbaz

Zorbaz has been defined as a hip quirky sports bar, but it is a family friendly establishment that is located right on Pokegama Lake. Zorbaz décor will draw the attention of every child at heart. You will find old boats, oars, and up north memorabilia hanging on the walls; a pontoon boat made into tables and sports stadium seating. They offer Americanize Mexican and Italian fare from pizza to tacos. They offer a kids menu. Food that is easy to take on the go. They have their own private beach area and they will deliver right to your boat. They offer a full calendar of events through the season like toga parties and 80’s night.  The kids can play at the beach while you sit back and sip on your favorite beverage watching a game of beach volleyball.
