As the weather continues to stabilize this catching has only increased. Panfish, like crappies and bluegills, have continued to be caught in the shallows. A slip float, with a small split shot and your favorite jig/plain hook tipped with a crappie minnow or panfish leech should leave your hands sore at the end of the day! Most anglers have been having success in any emergent vegetation sticking out of the water in the 1-4’ of water range. Panfish are typically schooled up heavily in areas, so don’t stick around if your bobber isn’t dropping, and remember to work over areas really well that you are getting some bites in.
Now that we are getting closer to the heat of the summer, the walleyes have been schooling up much better. Right now on almost every area lake, cabbage beds in 6-14’ of water have been the ticket. Using a simple 1/16-1/4 ounce jig tipped with a shiner will be your best bet! However, there has been more bug hatches in the last week than what we would see on a normal year, so guys are having better than usual success running live bait rigs with crawlers and leeches too.
A good rule of thumb is to ask the experts at the bait shops and sporting good stores on what is biting, what lakes to consider, and what bait system seems to be working.
