Summer is right around the corner in the Grand Rapids area, and this means that bikes are being taken out for the season, and excitement is being shared throughout the local biking community. Whether you are looking forward to fat tire biking, trail biking, or mountain biking, Grand Rapids offers opportunities for all, and all are welcomed.Mesabi Trail Logo-edited

Mesabi Trail

The Mesabi Trail runs along the beautiful woods of St. Louis County and Lake County. From Grand Rapids to Nashwauk, from Virginia to Ely, and many neighboring towns in between, the trails are carefully trimmed, have a focus on health, safety, and getting fit, you are bound to have loads of fun while also feeling comfortable on the ride. So, get out biking and have fun!

If you are over the age of 18 and wish to ride on the trails, you will need a wheel pass. Passes may be bought through the Mesabi Trail website online, self pay boxes located at entry points, or at wheel pass vendors throughout the Mesabi area. The cost is $15 for an annual pass if you would like to get on the trails often throughout the season, however, it is only $5 for a 3 day pass, not requiring those days to be back-to-back.

Great River Energy Tour

trail-activitiestour0This year, as highly anticipated by Minnesotans, the Great River Energy Mesabi Trail Bicycle Tour will be on August 6. Some things have changed this time around, and some things have stayed the same on the tour. Now, you can choose to start earlier in Virginia and take the long route – 67 miles – or start closer to Grand Rapids in Taconite and do the last 12 miles.  All routes lead to the Itasca County Fairgrounds in Grand Rapids.

When you register for the tour, you can to join in an many fun activities for one low price. There will be a live concert with a picnic to greet you at the finish line, free tour t-shirts, rest stops along the tour with refreshments, and many more advantages for touring with Great River Energy on the Mesabi Trail.

More Places to Ride in Grand Rapids

The Mesabi Trail is not the only place to ride in the Grand Rapids area, there are many other exciting trails located close to Grand Rapids. The gorgeous Joyce Estate is located in the Chippewa National Forest near Grand Rapids. The Joyce Estate trail is perfect for both fat tire biking or mountain biking. If you are looking for a shorter trail close to home, consider the Itasca County Bike Trail. The trail is paved throughout the seven miles. The Itasca County Bike Trail is perfect for a quick bike ride in between activities or taking the entire family out for a spin.
