Judy Garland Museum to Host 75th Anniversary of Wizard of Oz Festival in Grand Rapids, Minnesota

The Children’s Discovery and Judy Garland Museum is proud to release their schedule for the 2014 Wizard of Oz Festival, which will be held over the dates of June 10 – 14.    The festival name has been changed this year from the Judy Garland Festival to the Wizard of Oz Festival in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the movie, “The Wizard of Oz”, starring Judy Garland.  Judy Garland was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota on June 10, 1922.  Our mission statement for this years festival is “Honoring Stars from the past, and inspiring talent for our future”.   The complete schedule of events can be found on our Judy Garland website, www.judygarlandmuseum.com

Celebrate Judy Garland’s 92nd Birthday in her birthplace, Grand Rapids

On Tuesday, June 10, the first day of the festival, will be the unveiling of our new Wizard of Oz exhibit at the Judy Garland Museum.  That evening we will be celebrating Judy’s birthday with “Judy & Oz” karaoke and sing-a-long at the Sawmill Inn Hotel ballroom, located next door to the museum.

Wizard of Oz Events at Old Central School

Wednesday, June 11, will start with a Welcome Breakfast and “Missing Ruby Slipper” detective update breakfast meeting, also at the Sawmill Inn and a “Welcome Dorothy” party at the Old Central School House in downtown Grand Rapids, MN.  The “Welcome Dorothy” party will include horse and carriage rides, Oz related games and our very own “Wash & Brush Up Company” complete with hair braiding and chalk coloring, special Oz nail polish designs and Oz glitter tattoos.  Miss Reece Veatch, will be our “Honorary Dorothy” for this event.  Reece is the little 8 year old girl, from Ohio, who came up with the idea to attempt to break a Guinness Book of World Records, during our 2014 festival, for the most dressed up characters from the 1939 movie,  “The Wizard of Oz”.  One dollar for each participant will collected and go to our local Habitat for Humanity – also Reece’s idea!  Wednesday will end with a Mystery Dinner party at the Sawmill Inn.

Highlights for Thursday, June 12, events include an Oz Film Fest at Mann Theater, Wizard of Oz Jeopardy Game at the Sawmill Inn and a “Welcome to Oz” banquet at the Sawmill Inn hotel where the ballroom will be turned into the land of Oz.  A State Fair hot air balloon will be available (weather permitting) to have pictures taken with characters from the movie, during the cocktail hour of the banquet.

Wizard of Oz Historian, John Fricke to Present

John Fricke, noted Oz Historian and Author, will start the day on Friday, June 13, with two presentations conducted at the Sawmill Inn.  The first one will be on the making of the Wizard of Oz movie and the second on the impact the movie has had on popular culture over the last 75 years.  An old fashioned Oz Fair will be held at the Children’s Discovery Museum including a Gale Family Farm Petting Zoo, fair games and a cake walk.  At 5:30 pm we will be attempting to break a Guinness Book of World Records by having the most dressed up characters from the 1939 movie, “The Wizard of Oz”, on the Evergreen Terrace lawn, next door to the Judy Garland Museum.  The day will end with a free showing of the classic 1939 movie on a outdoor Jumbo Tron movie screen, also held on the Evergreen Terrace lawn.

Our last day, Saturday June 14, will start with a “Red Sneaker Walk” at 10:30 am and lead into our Emerald City Fest at the Old Central School House in Grand Rapids.  Horse & carriage rides will be available again along with our “Wash Up & Brush Up Company” beauty parlor.  Oz games, giant bubbles and a street magician will on entertaining us from 11:30 – 2:30 pm.  Our local Baby Steps Boutique will be holding a Munchkin Baby Shower, where we can help the littlest ones from our area!  Our grand finale event will be our Youth Talent Contest held at the Reif Performing Arts Center in Grand Rapids.  The contest is for youth 16 and under.  The grand prize for the Youth Talent Contest is a $750. humanities scholarship and $250. cash ,totaling $1,000.  Judy’s son, Joe Luft, will be one of our judges for the Youth Talent Contest.

A family scavenger hunt will also be offered during the festival.  The first clue will be given out on Wednesday, June 11, at the “Welcome Dorothy” event at the Old Central School House.  A cake decorating contest and “Toto Too” Dog Talent Contest will be held during the festival.  Check our website at www.judygarlandmuseum.com for more details about the festival and how to enter and be a part of the fun.
