An important advancement that significantly adds to the comfort of our patients and families is the location of the Emergency Department (ED) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) adjacent to each other. Patients often move between the ED and ICU areas. Our innovative design creates an environment and process that is as seamless for patients and their families as possible. By taking advantage of a match in nursing skills and a similarity in equipment, we are able to maximize the efficient use of staff, supplies and equipment – all to the benefit of patient care.
Skilled in many areas – Our Emergency Department physicians and nurses acquire a broad base of knowledge as well as advanced procedural skills, including surgical skills, trauma care, advanced cardiac support and advanced airway management.
Intensive Care Unit
Our ICU offers care for patients from infancy to adult. A new state-of-the-art central monitoring system allows for the most accurate and efficient management of ICU patient care. Features include:
- 8 rooms each equipped with a private shower and bathroom.
- A negative airflow room for patients requiring additional protection from infection.
- Dedicated waiting and family area.
The Edge of the Wilderness area in northern Minnesota may be remote, but emergency services are equipped and trained to reach snowmobilers, fishermen or hunters who need evacuation from locations deep in the woods and far from roads.
The Bigfork Ambulance Service Association (BASA) serves the Bigfork area with specialized equipment such as a covered rescue stretcher that can be towed by an ATV or snowmobile. Two trained emergency medical technician (EMT) members are always within five minutes of the ambulance building. BASA is augmented with equipment from the Bigfork Volunteer Fire Department.
Once at Bigfork Valley, emergency services are provided by a physician in a well-equipped Level IV trauma center. Bigfork Valley is a CALS (Comprehensive Advanced Life Support) certified hospital, with medical personnel trained in rural emergency care. The department is adjacent to the inpatient care area and centrally located to the lab, imaging and surgical departments.
Bigfork Valley also has a permanent decontamination room for incidents where a person is exposed to a hazardous external chemical. The decontamination room allows for a series of contained water washes through a separate entrance to the emergency room.
If medical staff feels that the patient needs to be transported to a large urban hospital for care, it has a helipad serviced by several air ambulance services.
BASA is dispatched by the Itasca Country Sheriff’s Department 911 service.
Consultations – Joint injections – Education
Castings and fractures – Follow up care
