One upcoming sports tournament is the Grand Rapids Lacrosse Shootout on May 7th and 8th. There will be forty Boys and Girls teams from all over Minnesota and Canada. This is the largest tournament in the area and stands out as the most unique setting for a tournament of this type. The unrivaled venue of Sugarbrooke Golf Course overlooking beautiful Sugar Lake is transformed into 7 fields of play with over 800 players shooting for gold in several levels of Lacrosse action.

The Shootout, which is put on by the Grand Rapids Amateur Lacrosse Association, was created to draw people to the Grand Rapids area for an opportunity to witness firsthand the excitement of this sport that has longstanding roots in Northern Minnesota. Now in it’s seventh year, the Shootout has evolved into a premier event in the 5 state area and also includes several teams from Canada. Players range in age from 3rd to 12th grade with intense competition at all levels.

Players and spectators enjoy onsite concessions, merchandise vendors and Northern Minnesota hospitality from the Grand Rapids Lacrosse tournament staff and Sugar Lake Lodge. The local Kiwanis club sets up a full outdoor kitchen to help with the cooking and of course serve their famous Lumberjack Breakfast every morning. Sugar Lake Lodge offers onsite hotel accommodations, townhomes, cabins and a full bar and restaurant in Otis’ Grill.

Grand Rapids Lacrosse was started from the ground up by Brad Gallop who remains committed as the Shootout Tournament Director and also as the Boys Varsity/Head Coach of the program. The program has successfully graduated dozens of boys and girls with several going on to play at the collegiate level. Within the last few years the program has produced 2 Girls State Champion teams and a Boys Junior Varsity 2nd in State. Grand Rapids Lacrosse continues to build steam hoping to spark other start up clubs in the Northern Minnesota and Range areas.

Lacrosse is documented as America’s oldest sport with evidence of Native American origins dating back well beyond the 16th century. This exciting sport is now the fastest growing sport in Minnesota! For history on the Lacrosse and specific ties to Northern Minnesota please visit http://laxallstars.com/la-crosse-wisconsin/
