The Showboat Landing on the Mississippi River is opening up for more than just an annual variety show this year. This will bring unique experiences on the Mississippi River at Showboat Landing throughout the summer. The events will include dining on the river, ballroom dancing, independent films, and, of course, live theatrical productions.
This will be a monthly opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine & delicious wood fired pizza whilst taking in live music on the banks of the iconic river. Delicious gourmet pizza will be provided by Log Home Wood Fired Pizza which has developed a name and reputation throughout the region because of their unique pizzas, cooked on site in their traveling wood fire oven. Wine on the Mississippi gives attendees a chance to enjoy a variety of popular tunes and live jazz from local musicians. The pizzas are $8.50 each; with wine and beer starting at $5 a glass. There is a $5 cover charge that comes with one drink token. Non-alcoholic drinks will also be available onsite. If you are after that unique Minnesotan experience, then head down to the Showboat Landing for Mississippi Starry Nights: Ballroom Dancing on the River Stage. Take a partner with you and join the dance instructors for ballroom dancing basics as the loons sing you their nightly song on the river. All enthusiastic dancers are welcome, experienced or not. Mississippi Starry Nights is held on Fridays June 19, July 24, August 28, September 25 from 5pm until dark. There is a $5 cover charge and refreshments will be on sale onsite.
This year, due to the renovations at the Reif Center, the Summer Independent Film Series is being held outdoors at Showboat Landing. Get ready to enjoy this unique experience of cinema under the stars on the Mississippi River! Brought to you by the Reif Center and the Grand Rapids Area Library. The film screenings will be held on June 30, July 7, July 14. Films start at 9:15pm. The event is free and open to the public. There will be popcorn and refreshments available for purchase. The films screening this summer will be “For a Woman” on June 30, “Autumns, 3 Winters” on July 7 and “Grigris” on July 14. This summer opens up a new phase for Showboat Landing. The venue is hosting more than one theatrical production this season with the addition of Ziibi, an Uncommon Loons and Grand Rapids Players production. Ziibi is a stage spectacular premiering on the river stage in July. Derived from the Ojibwe word misi-ziibi (as in Mississippi) meaning “big river”, Ziibi takes the audience on a colorful journey of spectacle and song, whilst celebrating the life of the river. A visual and musical narrative of song, dance, and large puppetry, the Uncommon Loons collaborate with local members of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe to create a culturally collaborative piece of performance art. Performance dates are July 30, 31 & Aug 1, 6, 7 & 8. All shows begin at8:30pm. Tickets are $10 (adults), $8 (seniors/students) and $5 (children 12 yrs. and under). Celebrating the 60 year anniversary of the venue, the traditional Showboat Variety Show returns this year to mark this special occasion. It will be a variety show of colorful, vaudeville styled performances with a mixture of song, dance and skits, featuring local and guest performers. Entertainment for the whole family!
