Fall Color
Peak
This year’s fall color display is
expected to be the best in 10 years;
and, so far, the Grand Rapids area is
off to a fantastic start. Minnesota DNR
reports area colors
are at 50-75% of peak display now, with the
peak expected to occur October 4 – 16.
Now is a great time for a fall weekend
getaway with camera in hand. The Grand
Rapids area is home to a National Scenic
Byway for driving and motorcycling, as
well as federal, state, and county
forestlands for hiking and mountain
biking. Updated
fall color reports are
posted on Facebook, and
fall lodging
specials are posted weekly at visitgrandrapids.com. |

Northern Lights Delight
Ongoing solar flare activity is creating
a spectacular northern lights display in
the night sky. Local photographer Bob Conzemius captured this image of the aurora borealis near the town of Bovey
on September 27th. Best viewing is
generally found five miles or more away
from cities or populated areas to reduce
the glare from artificial light sources.
Activity is expected to continue for
several more days. |

Grand Rapids Farmer’s Market
T he Farmer’s Market is enjoying a loyal
following in downtown Grand Rapids as
residents and visitors alike continue to
shop for locally grown food, fresh
flowers, and more. Food source awareness
and the nutritional benefits of buying
local produce are drawing shoppers in
higher numbers than in the past. The
Farmer’s Market is open Wednesday and
Saturday mornings from 8am-noon, and
Monday evenings from 3-7pm through
October. |

Grouse Hunting
With over one million acres of managed
public and industrial forestland, the
Grand Rapids area is an ideal location
for grouse hunting. Sampling of grouse
drumming indicates a strong population
of adult birds, but the cold, wet spring
may have impacted the spring hatch and
hunters may see declines in the numbers
of younger birds. Local guides
are available, and many local
hotels and
resorts welcome your hunting dogs during
fall months. If you prefer to hunt on
your own,
hunter hiking maps are
available at no charge to help you
locate public lands. |
