Fishing
Opener Arrives
Despite
late season snowfalls and cold
spring temperatures, Grand
Rapids area lakes were open for
the start of the 2008 walleye
fishing opener on May 10th. With
some lakes being still frozen
over just days prior to the
opener, many anglers were
anxious about the potential for
ice cover to remain on the
larger lakes. In a few isolated
areas, anglers had to break
through sections of ice that had
formed at boat landings, but
this didn’t appear to stop
fishing fanatics from reaching
open water. Many anglers were
prepared for cold water
temperatures and the slower bite
usually produced by those
conditions, but were surprised
to find that fishing was
actually quite good on the
opening weekend. Links to
updated fishing reports for the
Grand Rapids area are now
available on our fishing page.
Anglers are asked to be aware of
the fact that some fish have not
yet spawned and to inspect fish
carefully before deciding which
to keep. Releasing large females
that have not yet spawned will
help ensure good fishing into
the future. If you are
interested in learning to fish
but are unsure of what to do,
where to go, or simply do not
have a boat of your own, our
fishing guide page has a
listing of local guide services
to help you.
Forest
History Center – A Place to
Experience Nature
Grand
Rapids is the home of the
Minnesota Historical Society’s
Forest History Center. At the
Forest History Center, visitors
can explore the interpretive
museum to learn about how life
in Minnesota is influenced by
and connected to our forests.
Visitors can tour the many
buildings of the recreated 1900s
logging camp with a costumed
interpreter for a glimpse into
the lives of Minnesota’s early
white pine lumberjacks. The
blacksmith shop, company store,
bunkhouse, cook shack, draft
horse barns, and floating river
wannigan are just a few of the
sites waiting for you at this
quality educational attraction.
The Forest History Center offers
hiking trails, educational
programming and special
naturalist events all summer
long. Our
calendar of events has a
complete list of FHC events.
