The 1,000 Grand Lakes boasts world-famous Minnesota ice fishing and millions of acres of public land for cross country skiing, fat biking, snowmobiling and hiking. Snowmobiling Minnesota Trails
There are 22,000 miles of Minnesota snowmobile trails. Itasca County has over 1,000 of snowmobile trails, including the infamous Taconite Trail. Our snowmobile and cross country trails are some of the best groomed trails in the state. There are over 16 clubs and organizations that are responsible for maintaining the trails; most of which are volunteer run. This year, mother nature has not blessed us with the snow like we had last year, however, there are still plenty of trail recreation taking place. There is cross country skiing available on Itasca County Northern Lights Nordic Ski Club Trails and at Mt Itasca cross country ski trails. Make sure to check out the Grand Rapids Trail Conditions and the MN DNR Trail Conditions before heading out. Remember, when crossing area lakes and bogs to use caution and stay on the designated paths.
Minnesota Winter Attractions
You will find a lot of historic and cultural opportunities at Minnesota Attraction locations that are open year round. At these attraction locations you will find both indoor and outdoor winter activity opportunities. Most of these are family friendly and provide a great escape to explore and learn. Grand Rapids is no different. Some of our area attractions close during winter months, but many are open, but have limited hours that focus on weekends. In Grand Rapids you will find “Into the Woods” activities at the Forest History Center; downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing and snow tubing at Mt Itasca Winter Sports Center; and free museum and monthly historic and cultural exhibits at the Itasca County Historical Society.
