Visit
Forest History Center; $6/person, driver and
escort comped. A new display was unveiled in May
2004; try the hands-on components of the newly
installed exhibits and view the new “Fire in the
Forest” object theater; the interpretive
characters help us step back in time to the days
when going to town was something planned; there
are also 3 miles of hiking trails. (2 hrs) |

Enjoy the lumberjack dinner
(hosted by the
Sawmill
Inn). If you wish to eat at the cook shack at the
Forest History Center, there is a $200 fee for use
of the shack & staff, cost of catered meal is
additional. Or you can choose to have the same
meal at the Sawmill w/o the fee: the meal consists
of spuds (whole oven baked potatoes), baggies
(rutabaga), linen lifters (baked beans), Loggin’
berries (stewed prunes), punk (bread), swamp water
(tea), black jack (coffee), and pregnant woman pie
(apple pie). Cost is $19/plate. |

| Third Day |
| Start out with a city tour with Nira Beddoe. This
is a complimentary tour paid for by Visit Grand
Rapids. The one-hour tour will include the history
of Grand Rapids, the available shopping
opportunities, and the attractions that people
might want to see again. |
| Visit
Central School in the heart of Grand Rapids.
This was the first school in this district and now
houses shops, a restaurant, and the Itasca
Historical Society. Itasca Historical Society’s
display will be John C. Greenway – this gentleman
left a legacy in the town of Coleraine (5 mi east
of Grand Rapids). You will note that Bovey and
Coleraine are right next to each other. When they
were being established. Bovey was the “sin” town
(drinking, gambling, etc.) and Coleraine was the
“family” town (library, bank, homes). It’s a very
interesting bit of history. Cost is $3/person,
driver and escort comped. |

Take a trip up Highway 38, the
Edge of the
Wilderness Scenic Byway. Be sure to get a map
first and stop at the key points noted such at Laurentian Drive, scenic overlook at North Star
Lake, and the
Chippewa National Forest Ranger
Station. |
