The recent “December Thaw” brought several anglers to the ice with many good opportunities to explore the frozen tundra. Four wheeler travel was the best, but with the recent 2-4 inches of white powder, snowmobilers will be able to access the lakes and get to their favorite spots as well. Tip-up fishing for northern pike has been good and several area lakes are giving up nice fish. Spider, Wabana, Pokegama, and Trout lakes should be on your list to try. Crappie and bluegill fishing seems to be improving and several Grand Rapids area lakes are producing nice catches. Walleye fishing has improved and good reports are coming from Big Winnie, Wabana, Moose, and after hours on Pokegama. VMC spoons and a minnow head, Jigging Raps, and a shiner minnow on a dead stick have all been working well for walleyes. With a little more snow the trails will be in full use for snowmobilers and cross country skiers alike.
