This week’s ice fishing report brought to you by Tom Neustrom, MN Fishing Connections.
People are still ice fishing in the Grand Rapids, Minnesota area. Caution is to be used when venturing out on the ice. The ice has been compromised by warm weather a couple weeks ago and now with the colder temps this week. Make sure that you let someone know when you are heading out and when they can expect you back as a safety precaution.
The lakes where the ice seems to be decent for foot travel are Bowstring, Big Balsam, South-End of Lake Winnibigoshish, and Round Lake. They are still catching nice perch on south-end of Lake Winnie, and other lakes there seems to be a decent panfish bite.
Stay off lakes that have current flowing into and out of. These are the lakes that deteriorated the most, and are unsafe even to foot travel. Open water isn’t that far away, and it isn’t worth risking a life for. Pack your cleats, and chisel to test the ice in front of you as you walk out onto the ice. Stay safe.
