This week’s Grand Rapids Ice Fishing Report by Tom Neustrom, MN Fishing Connections.
Right now in the Grand Rapids area ice fishing is foot travel only. People are fishing for panfish, like crappies, perch and bluegills. This time of year you will want to fish just below the ice. Many times fish are looking for warmer water so they are located just below the ice. Electronics might miss them, so consider throwing a line shallow. Small baits are encouraged with small jigs with plastics, waxy’s or euro larvae. Sometimes one waxy and small head jig could be the ticket to catching fish. Some of the lakes where people are catching nice panfish are Splithand (southeast of Grand Rapids), Graves (north of Grand Rapids past Suomi area), south end of Lake Winnibigoshish (north and west of Grand Rapids) where they have been catching nice perch. It is smart to wear a life jacket this time of year, wear ice cleats, and to test the ice ahead of you to make sure it is safe.
Tom will share in his next blog feature, “Getting Ready for Minnesota Open Fishing”. Stay tuned.
