With the late ice forming this year, like no other year before, we are starting to get good enough conditions with most lakes around 4-7 inches of ice. Fishing for Panfish like crappies and sunfish has been very good. Deeper lakes are forming ice, but another week before it is safe to go out on.  The exception is Lake Winnie with 4-7 inches and anglers are getting out and doing very good on walleyes.

Panfish are biting on tungsten jigs with wax worms or plastics. For walleye, try VMC spoon with minnow head, golden color, or number 5 or 7 jig and rap with a minnow head on the treble hook. Make sure that you tell someone where you are going this year – very important and check the ice as you walk out to make sure it is thick enough. Our advice to you is to wear a life – jacket or flotation jacket when venturing out on early ice.

Be safe and Happy New Year. For more information: http://www.visitgrandrapids.com/do/ice-fishing-grand-rapids/.
