The season is moving on fast forward and before you know it spring will be here. The warmer than normal weather has slipped elsewhere, but anglers have still been out in force.
Mobility has been the key and the most pursued species have been panfish. With so many lakes in the Grand Rapids area with good angling opportunities for crappies and bluegills. Whether they are drive to lakes, snowmobile, or walk-in style ,most often the more remote the body of water the better fishing opportunities exist.
There are several of these lakes that don’t allow motorized travel, so check regulations before for intend on fishing them. Also designated trout lakes that are stocked with Rainbow, Brook, and Brown Trout have to be angled with artificials only. No live minnows are allowed on these lakes. Light tackle is the preferred equipment with 4# test line and small baits. I prefer small spoons and Jigging Raps with chasing trout. Having your locator along can make quick work in locating fish. Trout have tendency to occupy many levels of the water column. This is why having a locator is rather important. When you hook one of these thoroughbreds it makes the whole trip worth it.
If you desire perch, then several lakes in the area have good to excellent perch fishing with many reaching lengths of 10-12 inches. Most often the 8-9’s are the size you will see in angler’s buckets, They are very tasty when fried or poached with butter. Most often when you find a few perch there are several around. The action can be constant and getting plenty for a meal. When you consider the Friday night fish fry’s in Wisconsin, fresh perch were always served at the hundreds of bars and restaurants. Times have changed but perch lovers still pursue and drool over a meal of fresh yellow perch. Small baits tipped with larvae or a minnow head are hard presentations to beat. Locations can vary from rock, to mud, gravel, and weed beds. Drilling and moving until you find an active school is a practice of perch chasers. Some of the area lakes that have excellent perch fishing are Bowstring, Sand , Pokegama, Big Winnie, and Trout lakes. With some accumulation of new snow look for the trials to improve for snowmobilers and cross country skiers. Come join us.
