The summer in Northern Minnesota has been spectacular this year and the fishing has been excellent. The weed growth which is a necessary component for good habitat is at it’s optimum.
Northern Pike have been especially cooperative and several lakes in the Grand Rapids area are giving up nice fish. Wabana, Spider, Pokegama, Trout, Bass and North Star Lakes have been good destinations for excellent pike fishing.
For the panfish fans bluegill fishing has been off the charts. All the area lakes have been producing nice catches of bluegills and some have been of the 9-11 inch variety.
Large and smallmouth bass fishing continues to be excellent with summer locations producing terrific opportunities. Traditional spots always produce, but don’t overlook deep weed edges and rock piles. Always remember that the main forage for bass of both species are crayfish and small panfish.
Walleyes are pretty much in their summer locations with weed edges and off shore structures on most of the good walleye lakes are positive choices. Spinners and crawlers, Shad Raps, Bottom Bouncers and spinners, slip sinker rigs with crawlers, leeches and creek chubs can put walleyes in the boat all summer.
