This week’s Grand Rapids Fishing Report by Tom Neustrom, MN Fishing Connections.
As the weather changes above the surface things begin to change below the surface as well. The timing of certain bug hatches on all of the lakes in the Grand Rapids Area begins the summer patterns for walleyes and other species.
Most of the area lakes are providing good action for walleyes and the presentations are changing from minnows and jigs to crawlers, leeches, and spinners. Trolling crankbaits, such as Rapala Shad Raps, is also a great way to cover water and catch fish of multiple species. Some of the lakes that have been especially good for walleyes have been Trout Lake, Pokegama Lake, Big Splithand, Round, and Big Jesse. Fish off-shore structures and weedlines for best results and keep moving until you find active fish.
Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass fishing has also been very good and many lakes in the Grand Rapids Area and anglers have been targeting shallow areas of lakes with spinner baits and crankbaits as well. Turtle Lake, Pokegama Lake, Trout Lake and several lakes north and east of Grand Rapids have been good choices for both Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass. Now off their beds, Bluegills and Crappies will disperse from spawning areas and can be found on new emerging weedbeds. Northern Pike opportunities have also increased and Spider Lake, Pokegama Lake, Bass Lake, Round, and Trout lakes are good destinations for good pike fishing.
As you can read from the above report and view the fabulous photos shared with us, Grand Rapids, Minnesota is a fabulous fishing destination for all anglers. Whatever fish species you are interested in, you will find it in one of the thousands of Itasca County lakes that are located within minutes of downtown Grand Rapids.
