Favorite Rides Around Grand Rapids, Minnesota
Guest Blog by: Wayne Roskos, avid motorcycle rider (Harley Davidson) from the northern reaches of Minnesota sharing his favorite rides around Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
If you are like me and just can’t wait to see what’s around the next bend, then your excitement will start on the roads of Itasca County. There is as many scenic roads here as there are any where in the state. I bet we have more lakes and rivers to explore than any other county.
If you are by yourself, or touring with your posse, you will find the locals friendly and willing to share a story or two.
I am always trying to sneak a ride in when I can and sometimes I am limited by time so I have a couple of favorite short runs that are my favorite rides around Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
West & South Motorcycle Route: Head west out of Grand Rapids on Hwy 2 and when you reach the last set of stop lights out of town, take a left, head south west on Co. Rd 63 to Hwy 6 So. Take a left on Hwy 6 So. This is a very nice stretch of road with the trees right up the edge of the road. Ride till you get to the intersection of Hwy 6 and Hwy 200 east, just as you are about to enter Remer. Take a left and follow Hwy 200 east till you arrive in Hill City. This intersection is Hwy 169. If you take a left, you can stop and say hey to everyone at Harry’s Bar and Grille. Best burgers and the coldest adult beverages south of Grand Rapids. And if you are real lucky, the BBQ team has made up some special treats to share. Head north out of Hill City on Hwy 169 back to Grand Rapids. It is about an hour trip, not counting how long you stay at Harry’s!
North & West Motorcycle Route: If you want to go north out of Grand Rapids, hwy 38 is a must. Half way up, the road is a little rough ride now but, is still a ride you will not soon forget. You zig and zag between all of the lakes and rivers and just when you think you cannot be more amazed, you cross the continental divide. Very Cool. Just as you enter Marcel, there is this cool little place called Richie’s. If you are still in the miles mode, go into Marcel, go left on Co Rd 286. That will take you to the “Oldest Bar in Minnesota” Hayslips Corner Bar in Talmoon. Great piece of history and a great place for you favorite adult beverage. When you are ready to ride, turn left and head south on Hwy 6. This nice road will take you into Deer River and it will be time to stretch you legs. Gas up at the Cenex and just across the way grab a seat at the OutPost. Great food and beverage. When it is time swing a leg over, take a left and head east back to Grand Rapids. This about a 2 – 3 hour ride but, a great ride with all kinds of different terrain.
Like many of the rides in the northland, you will have the wilderness to keep you company and the roads tend to follow rivers and lake shore lines. And guess what, the rivers are never straight so expect some “twistys” and beautiful scenery. Also, be aware of the wild life, and I am not just talked about the night life, the wilderness always has some of it’s creatures out and about. The deer are out in the early morning and the evening right at dusk/dark.
The rider in the northland is also treated with some excellent roads. Our counties have been upgrading roads constantly and we have some great roads to take you out there. All these roads connect and could keep you out all day. Plus, there is always a cool place to stop, relax, and enjoy your favorite adult beverage.
The variety of roads and scenic views of Itasca County will have you coming back for more! Hope you enjoyed my favorite rides around Grand Rapids, Minnesota. For more mapped routes, check out Visit Grand Rapids motorcycle resource map.
