The Grand Rapids Arts organization was created to support arts and culture in the Grand Rapids area. They host a monthly art/culture event, First Friday Art Walk, in downtown Grand Rapids that connects art/culture, shopping, dining and the downtown business district.
In April of 2008, through a grant from the Blandin Foundation, a group of area art organizers met to create an arts collective. This new organization would strive to build and educate audiences about the arts in their community, work jointly to market their individual events, and most importantly, establish the Grand Rapids area as the arts destination in northern Minnesota. These meetings led to the creation of Grand Rapids Arts.
Grand Rapids Arts Mission Statement
Grand Rapids Arts will create a structure to cooperatively market Grand Rapids area artists and arts events with an emphasis on collaboration, shared resources, and the Grand Rapids area as an arts destination.
First Friday Art Walk
The November 7th First Friday Art Walk in downtown Grand Rapids is one of the busiest the town has seen since the popular event began three years ago. There will be fifteen different art events taking place between the hours of 4 and 8 pm with a wide variety of different art forms featured – ceramics, poetry, woodworking, drawing, culinary arts, jazz, fiber art, and more!
Fine craft is on display at Bender’s Shoes with handmade rocking chairs by Cohasset craftsman Jim Pagel, and next door at MacRostie Art Center local woodworker Paul Losik is joined by Dale Johnson and Grant Kaihoi for an exhibit entitled Among the Trees.
In a visual arts mash-up, ceramic artist Robin Lillo will conduct demonstrations at The Yarn Gallery and potter Bruce Bartos will show his work amidst a display of Thanksgiving tablescapes at Flowers by Jeannie.
Creativity comes in many forms: True North Salon and Spa is featuring their makeup artists at the business’s grand opening and Jenny and Company is delving into the culinary arts with an olive oil and vinegar tasting.
In addition to visual and taste sensations, art walkers can take in jazz, bluegrass, and folk music at the VFW Post 1720, Judy Garland Museum, and Brewed Awakenings.
