Their winter focused programs include sleigh rides, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, vintage ski rendezvous, naturalist programs about hibernating animals, sledding, skating, basket weaving and tours of the 1900’s logging camp. The Judy Garland Museum is a great indoor location where you can tour Judy Garland’s birthplace home, a 3,000 piece Wizard of Oz exhibit, and the largest collection of Judy Garland memorabilia. The Children’s Discovery Museum shares building space with the Judy Garland Museum. The Children’s Museum is a great indoor opportunity for children age 2-11 to explore interactive exhibits like take part in a dino dig, play in the water table, learn about the river forest, and learn about geography of North America in the Geo Zoom exhibit. There is a lot of activites at the Judy Garland Museum and Children’s Discovery Museum.
The Itasca County Historical Society offers a FREE museum to explore historic and cultural artifacts that date back to 1800’s. They have a wonderful staff that can help guide you around the museum and give you a historic recollection of days gone by. Itasca County is rich with forestry, mining, and paper making history.
Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway
The Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway is a 47 miles scenic byway that connects Grand Rapids to Effie, Minnesota. There are a lot of outdoor recreation activities available up and down the byway. You will find hundreds of trails to explore Minnesota’s nature. On these trails you can explore on cross country skis, horseback, fat tire bikes, and snowshoes. MacRostie Art Center
The MacRostie Art Center has a FREE art gallery onsite as well as art studios that offer year round interactive art activities. The gallery offers beautiful art creations for sale by local artists. Each month they have new exhibits that celebrate the many different styles of art. You can create your own art by renting out the traveling art suitcase, or taking in one of their many age appropriate art classes. There are many art and cultural activities for you to enjoy at Mac.
The Reif Center
The Reif Center brings world renowned performances to Grand Rapids. These performances range from live concerts to traveling broadway productions. Most of the Reif Center performances are family friendly. While you wait for your performance, check out the traveling art exhibit in their lobby. The Reif Center is conveniently located off the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway and connects to the Grand Rapids High School. The Reif Center season is typically August to June, but in 2015 they will be undergoing a complete renovation and some of their performances will be held at other theatre locations. The Grand Rapids Public Library
The Grand Rapids Public Library has many family friendly activities scheduled. The location of the Grand Rapids Library is located on the Mississippi River. The building’s layout provides wonderful scenic views of the river from every vantage point. They offer adult forum presentations, children’s story time, and art creation classes. Mt Itasca Winter Sports Center is located a 5 minutes drive from Grand Rapids to Coleraine. Mt Itasca offers a wide variety of winter outdoor recreation activities. They offer snow hills for downhill skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. They have cross country ski trails on site as well. They offer full and 1/2 day rentals of ski and snowboard equipment. Lots of family friendly outdoor fun awaits you at Mt Itasca.
